The challenge
When RMIT Online launched in 2016, teaching demand needed to flex by program, discipline and teaching period. A fixed academic workforce would have been difficult to scale, but a transactional pool of casual tutors could have introduced inconsistency and weakened the learner experience.
RMIT Online needed access to current academic and industry expertise supported by a repeatable quality model.
The approach
Curio created a dedicated Faculty model spanning recruitment, selection, induction, deployment and continuing support. Facilitators joined a practitioner community and received ongoing training and individual coaching rather than being left to interpret the role alone.
Performance evidence was used to identify strong practice and support development over time.
What Curio delivered
- Recruitment and selection of adjunct academics and industry specialists
- Structured induction into RMIT Online delivery
- Allocation in response to changing teaching demand
- Continuing professional learning and one-to-one coaching
- A community of practice for facilitators
- Quality monitoring and performance support
- Administrative and workforce coordination at scale
The result
The Faculty model has supported RMIT Online continuously since 2016. Around 85 per cent of adjuncts were reported as actively engaged in industry or professional practice, helping teaching stay connected to current work. A cohort of Star Facilitators consistently achieved reported student satisfaction above 90 per cent.
