Redesigning Canvas LMS for multi-modal physics teaching at the University of Sydney

Curio redesigned a University of Sydney physics experience for online, blended and in-person delivery, using a five-phase concept-led pathway that later informed work across the University's core science units.

The challenge

Physics students could move among online, blended and in-person participation during the same semester. A course organised primarily around a weekly calendar didn't provide a stable learning journey across those modes.

The experience needed to foreground the progression of physics concepts and provide meaningful practical activity for students working away from campus.

The approach

Curio structured the learning through five phases: Imagine, Discover, Practice, Explore and Evaluate, connecting abstract concepts to real grand challenges such as the Starshot nanocraft and light-sail project.

Online lab experiences were co-designed to work on learners' own mobile devices, while navigation and signposting were simplified throughout Canvas.
