More than lift and shift for AUT's Canvas migration

The challenge

AUT was moving to Canvas across the university. A direct migration could have reproduced inconsistent structures and existing digital-learning problems in a new platform.

AUT instead wanted to use the transition to establish a stronger, more consistent approach to digital pedagogy while giving instructors practical tools to build and maintain their own courses.

The approach

Curio collaborated with AUT's altLAB on a needs analysis spanning the learning experience and authoring process. The team designed a component-based system of common page types and interactive elements that could be assembled without requiring raw HTML or repeated specialist intervention.

The result

AUT gained a reusable course framework for the migration rather than a set of individually redesigned pages. Instructors could continue building within the agreed approach, supporting consistency beyond the initial implementation.
